Register now for Fall Term classes
Monday / June 22, 2015
Now’s the time to apply for admission to Ellsworth Community College and register for fall term classes, which start Aug. 19. The sooner the better, the ECC Admissions Office staff advises … many required freshman classes are already filling up.
“It seems like our students fall into two distinct groups: the ones who decide early and register early, and the ones who wait until summer to commit,” says Adriane Sietsema, ECC Director of Admissions. “Either is fine, but those who still haven’t completed paperwork for admission need to get things moving right now so they have a good selection of classes to choose from this fall. Registering now also ensures that new students will be able to attend one of our upcoming New Student Orientation sessions.”
Sietsema says interest in ECC is high this fall for several reasons, one of which may be the fact that ECC has one of the highest student success rates in the state. The word is also out that ECC graduates have the second lowest average student debt load of any college or university in Iowa, which is a big factor for individuals and families as they consider investing in a college education.
“The facts are important to students and parents, and these two factors continue to make a big impression for us,” says Sietsema. “Students want to be successful in college, so the fact that Ellsworth has one of the highest student success rates in the state is huge. And student debt is also a big factor, so when we’re able to show that our graduates have less student debt than those from other colleges, people take notice. It’s a one-two punch that we’re very pleased to be marketing right now!”
She also notes that there’s still time to apply for some ECC scholarships to help offset college costs. One of ECC’s unique scholarships is called Return to Learning, designated for adult students who want to “dip their toe in the water” to see if they enjoy and feel comfortable in a college environment. The Return to Learning Scholarship pays for one three-credit course for qualified adult students.
“We have a significant number of adult students at Ellsworth, and this scholarship has been instrumental in helping some of them overcome the financial and emotional hurdles they face as they consider pursuing a college education,” says Sietsema. “Our Financial Aid Office is happy to meet with prospective students to discuss college costs, as well as scholarships and other types of financial assistance available to our students.”
With approximately 80 percent of ECC students taking the first two years’ coursework at Ellsworth and then transferring to finish a bachelor’s degree, the College’s Admissions Partnership Program (APP) with Iowa, Iowa State and UNI are also popular. Students who want to start at Ellsworth and transfer to one of the Regent universities can be enrolled at both colleges at the same time, which facilitates the transfer of credits and increases the students’ comfort level at both colleges.
“The other big selling point for us is that students love the small, private college feel of the Ellsworth campus as soon as they step on the grounds,” says Sietsema. “You’ll find friendly faces at every corner, ready to help you with any questions you might have.”
Ellsworth Community College’s fall term classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 19, and run through Friday, Dec. 11. The ECC Admissions Office is located on the second floor of the Gentle Student Center on the ECC campus, 1100 College Ave., Iowa Falls; the office is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
