Two YFU host families sought

YFU student Iris

Ellsworth Community College will host two Youth for Understanding (YFU) international exchange students for the 2015-16 academic year. Iris and Frederik will arrive in Iowa Falls in August and  live with their host families here until May 2016. YFU Campus Coordinator Tina Ruch-Wesselmann is now seeking host families to ensure that the two incoming YFU students’ needs are met.

Iris, a 19-year-old from Belgium, is interested in art, biology, history and geography. She enjoys computer games, cooking and baking, movies, skiing, and running/jogging. She has studied English for four years and is eager to experience all kinds of new things. A creative person who’s also somewhat of a perfectionist, Iris has studied Fashion and Sales and enjoys learning to design and sell clothing. She has been to the United States twice before and looks forward to having a great experience with her host family.

Frederik, an 18-year-old from Denmark, has studied English for 10 years. He attends a school with economic and business subjects, which fits with his career goal of international economics. He has played soccer since he was 4, and also enjoys fishing, golfing, skiing, outdoor activities and participating in student government. He has visited the U.S. four times with his family, and found YFU student FrederikAmericans to be very kind and polite. He says he wants to learn more about the culture and is looking forward to this fall.

YFU is a non-profit exchange organization that seeks families to mentor and host exchange students planning to attend colleges around the world, including Ellsworth Community College. Host

families essentially combine their passion for community and social responsibility via this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. By hosting a student from a different country and sharing with him/her your family traditions and American culture experiences, host families build interpersonal bonds of international friendship that will last a lifetime.

YFU exchange students bring spending money and have health insurance. They come prepared to follow family rules and want to become a part of the community, says Ruch-Wesselmann. Each student is also supported personally and academically by Ruch-Wesselmann and others at ECC.

To learn more contact YFU’s local ECC Campus Coordinator, Tina Ruch-Wesselmann, directly at 641-648-8524 or via email at tina.wesselmann@iavalley.edu.
