Ellsworth students earn state BPA honors

Two Ellsworth Community College students competed against other Iowa students at the state Business Professionals of America (BPA) Leadership Conference Feb. 23-24 in Des Moines, and both are now eligible to advance to the national competition.

Allison Kuennen of Lawler: 1st place in Administrative Support Team (with Ryan), 4th place in Keyboarding Production, and a medal in Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications.

Crosley Ryan of Eldora: 1st place in Administrative Support Team (with Kuennen), 4th place in Fundamental Word Processing, 5th place in Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications, and a medal in Parliamentary Procedure Concepts.

Kuennen, a freshman majoring in Business Administration, said the state BPA competition was a great experience. “It was great to qualify for nationals, and we’re even more excited because neither of us has been to California before!” Ryan, a sophomore (also a Business Administration major), added, “I was nervous when I got there, but then we just felt confident. It went well, and we’d practiced a lot and felt very prepared.”

Their advisor, Janet Siert, commended the women for doing so well under somewhat adverse testing conditions. “Some of the competitions were moved around at the last minute, and these ladies were in tough back-to-back testing from 12:30 to 5 pm with no breaks. They did amazingly well, and I’m just so proud of them both.”

The National BPA Leadership Conference will be held in May in Anaheim, CA.

For the 12th consecutive year, ECC took home the trophy for Corporate Sponsorship, thanks to the generous financial support received from Cort and Peg Van Buskirk.
