ECC Ag Students attend the Iowa Postsecondary Ag Students Conference

Ellsworth Community College Agricultural Students attended the Iowa Postsecondary Ag Students Conference in Moravia, IA last week. The Iowa Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization is an organization associated with agriculture/agribusiness, agriculture technologies, horticulture and natural resources offerings in approved postsecondary institutions offering postsecondary degrees. PAS is one of the ten career and technical student organizations that has been approved by the U. S. Department of Education as an integral part of career and technical education.

ECC students competed in a variety of team and individual events. “Our students represented us well, said Kevin Butt, agriculture instructor at ECC. “We came away with many accolades and the chance for many of them to advance on to the National PAS Conference next month in St. Charles, Missouri.”

Team Events: College Bowl – ECC Team #1 (Andrew Montes, Thomas Newhall, Aaron Bruihler, Lydia Johnson, and Marina Lindsay) placed 5th and qualified to go to nationals. Livestock Specialist – Swine – ECC Swine Team members Missy Gerkin, Ashley Nemechek, and Morgan Ferguson placed 2nd and advance to nationals.

Individual Events: Animal Health/Vet Tech – Christine Reyna took 1st place and Lauren Dirksen placed 3rd and both have qualified for nationals. Career Planning –  Ag Education Systems – Victoria Butt place 1st and advances onto nationals. Career Planning – Ag Processing & Biotechnology – Eric Stoakes placed 1st and advances to nationals. Career Planning – Power, Structural, & Technical Systems – Blake Ohm placed 1st, Andrew Montes placed 2nd, Derrick Lenz placed 3rd, and Kellan Coppinger placed 4th. All 4 advance on to nationals. Career Progress – Power, Structural, & Technical Systems – Aaron Bruihler placed 1st and advances on to nationals. Employment Interview – Feeds & Animal Health – Sydney See placed 4th. Precision Ag Specialist – Aaron Bruihler placed 2nd, Jason Arends placed 3rd, Glendon Mesch placed 4th, Blake Ohm placed 5th, Kellan Coppinger placed 6th, and Taylor Thompson placed 7th. All but Taylor qualify for nationals. Speakers in Ag – Impromptu – Sara Bergerson placed 7th. Business / Leadership Events- Madison Hoch represented ECC on the nominating committee and Jade Lecy represented ECC on the Finance and Activities Committee. Both Madison and Jade were ECC’s voting delegates at the business session on February 9th.

Thomas Newhall and Victoria Butt were candidates for 6 positions on the Iowa PAS State Officer team for 2017-18. Thomas Newhall was elected to one of the four Vice-President positions and Victoria Butt was elected to the office of President. The last time ECC had a state president was Mark Tapper in 2007-08. Both students will serve and represent the Iowa PAS Organization and ECC at various agricultural education events for the next 12 months.
