Medical Assisting programs receive reaccreditation notice
Friday / October 5, 2018
Iowa Valley Community College District has received notice that the Medical Assisting programs offered at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Marshalltown Community College have been reaccredited through 2027. The nine-year reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Occupation Programs (CAAHEP) recognizes that the programs are in compliance with nationally established accreditation standards.
“We are exceedingly proud of our Medical Assisting programs and students,” says Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor. “Dee Lynk, our Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and full-time instructor at both colleges, worked with a team over an 18-month timeframe to complete and submit the reaccreditation documents required. It’s a massive effort to pull it all together, and we’re thrilled for her and the Colleges that we received the nine-year seal of approval.”
Lynk was assisted in the reaccreditation preparation process by Kristen Murphy, Benita Peterson, Jan Sauerbrei, and Monica Segovia.
As part of the reaccreditation process, a peer review was conducted by the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MEARB) and CAAHEP’s Board of Directors. In addition to required documentation, the review also involved on-site visits by the accreditors.
“I’m thrilled that we received the nine-year accreditation status,” says Lynk. “Our team worked hard to provide the required five years of documented grades, syllabi, student work and course mapping. The MAERB curriculum includes a Master Competency Checklist that’s extremely detailed, but we got it all knocked out over about a year and a half.”
Those interested in the ECC Medical Assisting program can enroll in Spring 2019 to get two required General Education classes completed (CSC118 and BIO532), and then take a third class (ADM154) during Summer 2019 to be ready for the Medical Assisting coursework that begins in August 2019. The contact at ECC is Jan Sauerbrei (641-648-8647) and at MCC it’s Benita Petersen (641-844-5727).
