Conservation Club

The Conservation Club provides social and outdoor activities for people whose interests are similar. Monthly events offer members an opportunity to participate in local and regional field trips, community service projects, and social events. Here’s what we’ve been doing recently:

  • Local field trip events include astronomy, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, frog and toad surveys, monarch tagging, and exploring Hardin County’s beautiful and unique natural areas. Pizzas and picnics often accompany these events, which are enjoyed by students.
  • Regional field trip destinations include zoos, museums, or wildlife refuges. In the past, we’ve enjoyed visiting and exploring the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium (Dubuque, IA), Henry Doorly Zoo (Omaha, NE), Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge & Prairie Learning Center (Prairie City, IA), and Manchester Trout Hatchery (Manchester, IA).
  • Community service projects involve planting trees, cleaning parks and rivers, building bird houses, and assisting the Hardin and Franklin County Conservation Boards with special events.

Check out Ellsworth’s outdoor classroom (Calkins Nature Area & Interpretive Center) … it’s one of our favorite places to meet!
