Accounting Degree and Diploma Programs
Every business, school, hospital, and city government needs someone keeping accurate books. Iowa Valley's Accounting program trains you for that work: recording transactions, preparing financial statements, running payroll, and handling tax reports.
Choose the two-year Accounting AAS degree or a shorter Accounting Practitioner Diploma. Both are offered at Marshalltown Community College and Ellsworth Community College. Graduates start as bookkeepers, payroll accountants, and accounts payable or receivable clerks, and many keep building toward a bachelor's degree.

Frequently Asked Questions
What jobs can I get with an accounting degree from Iowa Valley?
Graduates are prepared for entry-level work as payroll accountants, accounts payable
and accounts receivable clerks, and general bookkeepers. These jobs exist in government,
manufacturing, healthcare, and accounting firms.
How long does the Accounting program take?
The Accounting AAS is 64 credits, about two years full time. The Accounting Practitioner
Diploma and Administrative Office Diploma are shorter at 30 and 15 credit hours required.
What's the difference between the AAS and the diplomas?
The AAS adds general education and deeper accounting coursework for broader job options. The Accounting Practitioner Diploma focuses on core bookkeeping and accounting skills for faster entry into the workforce. The Administrative Office Diploma prepares you for office roles that include bookkeeping duties.
Can I become a CPA or transfer to a four-year school?
A CPA license requires a bachelor's degree and more. If that's your goal, the Business
Transfer Major (AA) is the most direct route to accounting programs at Iowa's public
universities, including the University of Iowa's 2 Plus 2 plan. AAS credits don't
all transfer, so meet with an advisor early.
Where is the Accounting program offered?
At Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown and Ellsworth Community College
in Iowa Falls.
How much does the Accounting degree cost?
Tuition and fees for 2026–27 are $243 per credit hour for Iowa residents. The 64-credit
AAS comes to about $15,552 before financial aid, books, and supplies. File the FAFSA
to see what grants and scholarships you qualify for.
