Agriculture Science: Start Your Ag Degree at ECC

Agronomists, ag loan officers, and regional sales managers usually hold a bachelor's degree. Ellsworth Community College's Agriculture Science program is a lower-cost way to start one. The Agriculture Associate of Professional Studies (APS) degree covers crop science, animal science, ag economics, and general education, and is built for transfer to a four-year agriculture program.

If you want a shorter credential, the Agriculture (Ag Science Track) Certificate gives you a foundation in crops, livestock, machinery, and ag business. Classes meet at ECC's Agriculture Building on the Hamilton campus, just south of Iowa Falls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an APS degree?

The Associate of Professional Studies (APS) is a two-year degree for students who plan to transfer. You follow ECC's APS requirements and the course recommendations of the university you plan to attend, so your credits line up with that school's agriculture program.

Can I transfer to Iowa State or another university?

That's what the APS is built for. Pick your target school early and work with an ECC ag advisor so your courses match its requirements.

What careers does Agriculture Science lead to?

Careers include agronomist, ag loan officer, regional sales manager, and seed or chemical sales representative. Most agronomist and loan officer jobs require a bachelor's degree, which the APS helps you start.

What's the difference between the APS degree and the certificate?

The APS is a two-year transfer degree with general education, 62 credit hours. The Ag Science Track Certificate is a shorter credential focused on core agriculture courses, requiring 18 credit hours.

Do I need a farm background?

No. A farm, 4-H, or FFA background helps, but coursework starts with the fundamentals.

Where are classes held?

At Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. Ag classes meet in the Agriculture Building on the Robert and Arlene Hamilton campus, just south of town.

How much does it cost?

Tuition and fees for 2026–27 are $243 per credit hour for Iowa residents, less than most four-year universities charge for the same first two years. File the FAFSA to see what grants and scholarships you qualify for.
