Machinists and tool and die makers build the parts, tools, and molds that manufacturing depends on — in automotive, aerospace, agriculture, and consumer product production. MCC's 10-month Trades Practitioner Diploma gets you into the field fast; if you want to go further, the Tool & Die option adds two more semesters and qualifies you for more advanced, higher-paying work.

Credits also transfer if you later want a bachelor's degree: up to 64 hours toward a UNI degree, and 16 vocational hours to Iowa's Regent schools.

FAQs

What's the difference between a machinist and a tool and die maker?

Machinists set up and operate machines to produce parts. Tool and die makers design, build, and repair the specialized tools and dies used in manufacturing — it's a more advanced skill set, which is why the Tool & Die option is a second stage of training after the machinist diploma.
 

Is there an application process, or is this open enrollment?

The Trades Practitioner Diploma has a competitive-style entrance process: applicants must be at least 17, complete an application and interview, and may be asked to take entrance assessments. This is different from most MCC programs, so it's worth planning for ahead of your intended start date.
 

Do these credits transfer to a four-year degree?

Yes. Graduates can transfer up to 64 credit hours toward a bachelor's degree at the University of Northern Iowa, and 16 vocational credit hours transfer to Iowa's Regent universities.
 

Where do machinists and tool and die makers work in Iowa?
