Placement Testing Services

Ellsworth offers testing services to students through the Hub in the lower level of Kruse Main Hall.

Accuplacer-Next Generation Testing

ECC uses ACCUPLACER-Next Generation (the newest version) to provide an assessment of your basic academic skills to help you and your advisor choose courses and plan your educational program. Included in the exam are tests in writing, reading, and mathematics. ACCUPLACER is user-friendly with no time limit, and our staff is here to help (click for Information about Accommodations for Disabilities). Results are generated immediately following the completion of the test. The ECC Academic Advising Specialists will interpret the results individually, and your scores will go in your file in the Admissions office. There is also a version for students whose first language is not English.

Iowa Valley Community College District has a mandatory placement policy. This means that the results of your test will determine which classes you may take in certain subjects. Please refer to the ACCUPLACER-Next Generation Cut-Off Score Chart to see where you place. Your advisor or the Academic Advising Specialists can help interpret your scores if needed. There are re-testing and appeal options if you feel your scores do not accurately reflect your abilities. Please contact the Hub for more information.

CLEP Testing

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) offers a wide range of college-level exams for which a student may receive college credit. If you have acquired knowledge through experience or prior academic learning that may be equivalent to college-level courses, Ellsworth Community College offers the opportunity to get credit for that knowledge. CLEP is administered on the computer and is available to students from any college or university. There is a study guide with sample tests available for review at ECC’s library. More details about CLEP testing at ECC are available by downloading the CLEP Policy. You can also visit the CLEP’s website.

Visit the website for the most current exam cost (payable to CLEP), plus a $75 ECC test administration fee (payable to IVCCD); additional charges may be made depending on the number of CLEP credits earned. CLEP is given by appointment only. For more information, contact Tracy Crippin-Haake.
