Understanding Our History
An interest in and curiosity about the events, people, and ideas of the past are characteristics of someone involved in a career dealing with History. Historians research, analyze and interpret the past through writing, teaching, and research. Historians often specialize in the history of a specific country or region or period of time. Historians study and preserve archival materials, artifacts, and historic buildings and sites. They are included in a larger group called social scientists, which includes anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, political scientists, and sociologists, whose general job description is the study of all aspects of society.
An educational emphasis in History lends great value in understanding society and its institutions. History students develop skills in research, writing, and organizing thoughts, and they gain a unique perspective and judgment that’s valuable in all kinds of decision-making.
